So, I saw my first Alaskan Moose today and like a jackass, I left my camera at home because I was “just going to get groceries”. Nevermind that every time I’ve left my camera at home there’s been something I wanted to photograph. I’ve seen many a moose before, as they’re pretty common in Maine. My dad said that when we were kids we would run shrieking when we saw them but I don’t remember that.
Anyway, I hadn’t seen one here yet, but as I was walking the trail back from the bus stop with my groceries a large female moose ambles across the trail about fifty feet in front of me. Now, I’m no idiot and the guys had said that they’d seen a cow and calf on the other side of the housing complex a week or so ago, so I wasn’t sure if it was just the cow or not. There’s a fence on the other side of the trail, maybe 6 feet away, so if I kept going I was going to pass by this moose with 10 feet of distance between us, tops. Therefore I decided to turn around and walk something like 1.5-2 miles out of my way to get around to the other side of the housing. If there had been two of us, I might’ve suggested we walk by the moose but since I couldn’t see where she’d gone when she’d stepped off the trail, I wasn’t taking any chances of getting charged. The moose here might be used to people but they’re sure not tame.
