Turn, Turn, Turn

It is offically fall here, with the temperatures finally getting chilly. Its not chilly enough to turn the heat on yet, oh no, I'm trying to see if we can hit November 15th; although I'd love to not turn it on until December. I do suspect the time will come for a fire in the fireplace sooner rather than later.

Anyway, one of the highlights of my fall is a spinning class, four Sundays. It started last week when we worked with drop spindles. Here's the product of my first attempt with that:

and one more:

Today we learned how to use the wheel. Working with the drop spindle was definitely easier for me than the wheel was. Adding my foot to the process made things just a little bit more complicated. No photos of that because I didn't feel like being the nerd taking photos in class.

Llama llama

This:

is Flint. Flint is the family llama, who lives with and is owned by my future mother-in-law. Flint is not overly friendly, but he watches over the sheep, and is beautiful. Someday I will spin his wool into lovely lovely brown yarn.

And this:

is me feeding Flint. I was very excited that he would eat out of my hand. I'd fed him roses before, but not since last spring, and I was told Flint was a little resistant to eating from someone's hand. It was a big enough deal that both TheBoy and his mom ran for cameras. Good times with the family, good times.

Full Head, Empty Mind

I actually have an excuse for the lack of posting this week. I was/am sick. Caught some sort of a really horrible cold virus and had a really full, painful head with dizziness and a lot of body wracking coughing [my standard sick mo]. Luckily, TheBoy is absolutely wonderful and took excellent care of me and I was feeling better enough to go to my midterm exam today.

Intarsia.

No, this is not actually a post about me knitting. It is, however, a post about the word intarsia. When I hear the word, it makes me think of knitting. Colorwork specifically. I bet a lot of other people think the same thing.

Turns out that intarsia is an italian word, for inlay. And that during the renaissance they would make these hugely intricate wooden inlay items [doors, chests, etc]. These objects are then referred to as [for instance] an intarsia door.

A Little Snippet of my Morning.

1. Pour bowl of cereal.
2. Go to fridge and realize milk is old.
3. Check expiration date. Hmmm, 9 days past.
4. Sniff. Doesn't smell like bad milk.
5. Ask TheBoy to sniff milk.
6. Agree its not worth the risk of getting sick in the middle of class.
7. Empty milk into sink.
8. Pour whipping cream on cereal.
9. Add several spoonfuls of water to bowl and stir.
10. Eat, commenting to TheBoy on how cream makes your cereal feel a little greasy.

Yep, cereal with whipping cream. Mmm. [Hey, at least it wasn't whipped cream!]
