Cathartic Ink putting my own spin on things

I am the lizard queen.

I am bad about blogging. However, things are busy and I do not blog from work. They monitor my internet usage (as well as when I go anywhere in the building that I have to swipe my card for--i.e. everywhere except the main floor) so I am trying to keep this here blog off their radar. Not that I say anything about my job, but just in case.

Anyway, I love Anchorage's weather. Apart from being more humid than I really like it is yet to be above 72 degrees here. Its lovely. The office, however, is aggresively cooled so I am wearing my sweater to work every day no matter what. I hate Anchorage's traffic. The pedestrian never has the right of way, not even when the little white man shows on the crosswalk light. Yesterday, I got off the bus and waited patiently to cross. A jackass in a huge white truck pulled the entire way across the crosswalk so I very nearly got hit because I couldn't see the car coming on the truck's far side and they couldn't see me because the truck was between us. This afternoon I was amazingly jumpy and realized I don't feel like a six foot wide sidewalk is wide enough when a semi-truck is driving RIGHT next to me. I also felt extremely jumpy and unsafe while crossing the street. Oh, how I pine for the pedestrian friendly streets of Eugene.

Anyway, my sunburn has started to peel leaving bright pink, somewhat sore patches all over my face that are framed by small hanging bits of white, dead skin. I am afraid that I will end up being brown and white splotched, because I'm afraid the tan bits won't all peel off and that the red bits will not turn brown. I guess only time will tell. For the time being my face is slathered with lotion and itchy, and my arms are the same. They haven't started to peel yet, my estimate is that they'll start tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates!

and we’ll have fun fun fun…

had a blast this weekend. i went to the alaska scottish highland games in eagle river and watched a guy from oregon whomp on all the other guys. it was very cool. i also got sunburnt beyond belief there. i put sunscreen on before i left but forgot to bring it and toasted. my face and arms are bright screaming red. saturday night we went to a thai place and had some good food, then yesterday we lazed a bit then went to have a beer at the snow goose in downtown anchorage. good beer, good desserts [that's all we had]. it was a good weekend, i'd like another please. i may end up going to see a musk ox farm one day somewhat soon, but if it falls through i won't be crushed.

Yeah, Because Alaska Has its Own Atmosphere.

Overheard on the #36 to Alaska Pacific University:

Stupid Lady: The solstice starts tomorrow, you can check it on the website.
Other Lady: The solstice was yesterday.
Stupid Lady: No, its tomorrow.
Other Lady: [placating first lady a bit] Yeah, Alaska's is tomorrow, everywhere else was yesterday.
Stupid Lady: Yeah, because alaska has its own atmosphere.

Now, i'm not sure what the atmosphere has to do with anything but the solstice was most definitely yesterday. the solstice fesitval starts tomorrow and likely runs all weeked.

Also overheard on this bus ride were several 15 year old girls talking about failing classes, skipping school, being promiscuous, and just generally being beligerant. They were mocking this poor mentally challenged girl. The one girl [who sounded like a boy] called her a retard [although not loudly enough for her to hear]. When I glared at her, she loudly said "excuse me if I tell the truth". Being on the bus I was not about to start something and let it go. I really wanted to tell the girls to grow up and learn some tolerance. I wish I didn't have to risk a black eye on the bus in order to put idiots in their place.

Joyous Solstice!

That's right, today is the longest day of the year, I'm in Anchorage, Alaska--land of the midnight sun, and I'm not staying up all night. Sadly, I need to be at work by 9 am tomorrow and that means leaving an hour before in order to catch the bus.

Speaking of the bus, my first day of work was yesterday. Justin [one of the other interns] and I had gone on a test run on Sunday, located the office building, wandered around downtown, bought groceries, and figured we were in the clear. Well, Monday comes around and the three of us interns living here got on the bus together. A half hour later we discovered we got on the bus going the wrong direction (they go the same way leaving our stop) and had to call their boss. Since we wouldn't have made it to the office until 9am--after leaving at 7--he got a car and came to rescue us. We had managed to get completely turned around and ended up in the boonies, in some place called Muldoon. So far they haven't let us live it down.

The job is good, living in Alaska is a little weird. I desperately miss TheBoy, although I'm sure everyone who knows me saw that coming. The lightness isn't bad, however it messes with my internal clock a little. I'm not sleeping that well, not because its too light out to sleep--because its not that bad--but because my body is only tired from the time I get up until the time I leave work. 4 or 5 pm rolls around and I am wide awake. I am feeling sleepy now so it's off to bed for me. I leave you with a photo taken out my bedroom window.
